Seeing Yourself: Positive Body Image
Body image is defined as a person’s perception of their own physical appearance. That can actually be quite different from how others perceive us. Body image can be the result of a variety of experiences and impacted by societal standards. As women, body image has probably been a concern since we first experienced the changes that occur during adolescence. In menopause, we are going to experience new physical changes that may have an effect on self-perception. I know it has for me personally. How did this extra weight around my middle get here? And when is it leaving?!
Positive Body Image and Menopause
The North American Menopause Society offers a few simple suggestions to help you create a more positive sense of your body image:
- Compliment yourself: Instead of focusing on your flaws, find something you love about yourself!
- Feed your inner self: Engage in activities that are social, relaxing and even spiritual to help eliminate the stress.
- Exercise: Not only is exercise good for your health, it is great for improving your self-esteem and making you feel good!
Learning to take care of and love your body is crucial to your overall happiness and sense of well-being.
And on that note, I think I will go for a lovely walk in Central Park!
