Hormone Therapy and risk of Alzheimer’s
Dr. Allmen’s Comments: It has become increasingly clear that women who initiate hormone therapy closer to their menopause transition will also derive benefit regarding healthier brain function and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This is very different than starting hormone therapy 10 years after menopause, when the exposure to the brain does not appear to be helpful, and, in fact, may increase the risk of dementia. So if a woman is considering the use of hormone therapy for the treatment of hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal health, she is going to gain this extra benefit of brain health.
