Oral Contraceptives Should Be Over the Counter

By  |

Dr. Allmen’s Comments:  I am in favor of allowing women to buy birth control pills over the counter, because the risk of unintended pregnancies is so high in younger women, and the risk adverse effects from birth control pill use is so low.  This is especially true for young women who do not have affordable access to the health care system. Having said that, women really do need to see their gynecologist once a year for a variety of reasons, including a discussion about contraception. However, we should not stand in their way when it comes to obtaining contraception.
