Last month, a different study suggested that women should have less frequent mammograms.

How can women really feel confident with the current recommendations and technology when researchers keep changing the message?

Here is my best advice, and it applies to every new study and discussion about changes in recommendations involving everything from breast cancer screening, hormone therapy, osteoporosis treatment, PAP smear guidelines and beyond.

It takes years to do clinical trials, evaluate the data, formulate standards of care and then implement changes on a national level.  There are many organizations and experts involved in both the scientific and economic debate.

I never get too caught up in the latest study on anything, since I know that time and careful review will ultimately lead to the best medical practice.

So for the moment, keep your regularly scheduled mammogram appointment.  That’s what I intend to do.
